Prof. Eiji Tanaka Gives Expert Lecture on Temporomandibular Disorder

The Faculty of Dentistry at Universitas Gadjah Mada hosted a public lecture featuring Prof. Eiji Tanaka, DDS, Ph.D., from Tokushima University, Japan, with the theme “Diagnosis and Treatment of Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD)” on 19 March 2024. The event attracted a large audience, including students from various dental specialties, such as Oral Surgery, Pediatric Dentistry, Prosthodontics, and Orthodontics, who enthusiastically attended the presentation by the leading expert.

Temporomandibular Disorder (TMD) is a complex condition involving disturbances in the temporomandibular joint, masticatory muscles, and associated structures around the jaw. The temporomandibular joint is a complex synovial joint that connects the mandibular condyle with the mandibular fossa of the temporal bone. This joint allows for various jaw movements, such as opening and closing the mouth, protrusion, retraction, and lateral movement.

In his lecture, Prof. Tanaka provided an in-depth discussion on TMD, its impact on patients' quality of life, and the importance of accurate diagnosis and comprehensive treatment. He also emphasized the necessity of an interdisciplinary approach in managing TMD, encouraging collaboration among dental specialists to provide more holistic care to patients.

This lecture is part of UGM's efforts to support sustainable education in dentistry, aligning with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). During the interactive Q&A session, participants had the opportunity to discuss specific cases and treatment strategies with Prof. Tanaka, creating a dynamic learning environment.

The event received positive feedback from attendees, who appreciated the opportunity to learn from an international expert. UGM is committed to continually bringing international speakers to similar events to enrich the curriculum and strengthen its position as a leading dental education institution in Southeast Asia.

The expert lecture by Prof. Tanaka also supports SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 17 (Partnerships to Achieve the Goals). Through this initiative, UGM reinforces the importance of education and international collaboration in advancing dental practice and preparing students to face global challenges in the future.
