IKGK Program and Oral Medicine Specialist Program Collaborate to Hold Guest Lecture on Academic Innovation

On Wednesday (12 February), the Bachelor in Dentistry Program (IKGK) and the Oral Medicine Specialist Program of the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), held a guest lecture featuring distinguished speakers. The event was a collaborative effort between FKG UGM and BOKU University, Austria, supported by UGM’s Strategic Management Office. The guest speakers were Claus Reiner Michalek, Dipl-Ing., and First Lieutenant (Navy) Drg. Marapandi Cakra, MDSc. (Drg. Panji). The session was moderated by Drg. Fimma Naritasari, M.D.Sc., a lecturer of the Oral Medicine Specialist Program at FKG UGM.

Claus Reiner is an expert in academic innovation with a focus on e-learning. He currently serves as the Head of Teaching Services and Head of the E-Learning and Didactics Division at BOKU University, Austria. Meanwhile, Drg. Marapandi is an alumnus of the IKGK Program who graduated in 2024.

During the session, Claus emphasized that teaching methods continue to evolve alongside changes in society. “Each generation has distinct characteristics, which means their language and learning styles differ as well. As educators, it is essential to understand what students need and select the right method to meet those needs,” he said.

“There are no inherently good or bad methods—everyone has their own preferences. Over time, educators will find what works for them, and authenticity is key. Still, it’s good to explore and try new approaches,” Claus added.

drg. Panji shared his personal experience as a clinician involved in teaching. “I agree with Claus. From my experience, the method I use with junior colleagues doesn't work the same with my assistants,” he explained. He believes that communication is an art form, and each person has a different style. Therefore, messages must be tailored to match the character of each learner.

Also present at the event was the Head of UGM’s Strategic Management Office, represented by Dr. nat.techn. Francis M. Constance Sigit Setyabudi, STP, MP (Pak Sigit). “Claus’ presence here is part of an effort to build bridges across various programs, especially now that the Faculty of Dentistry has launched the IUFE (Inter University Center of Excellence) program. This initiative supports research activities and equipment procurement,” he stated. Pak Sigit also expressed his appreciation for the event and hoped it would provide great benefits for all parties involved.

In his remarks, Drg. Ruslin, M.Kes., Ph.D., Head of the IKGK Program, expressed his hope that the lecture would inspire both students and alumni from both programs and the faculty at large. “Thank you to both speakers for your time. I hope this session proves beneficial to everyone,” he concluded.

The event closed with a certificate presentation to the two guest speakers.
