Skills Lab Practicum Enhances Students' Competence in Subjective Examination

Yogyakarta, 22-28 October 2024 – The Department of Oral Medicine (IPM) at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), successfully conducted the Skills Lab Practicum on Subjective Examination as part of the Basic Topics in Clinical Dental Procedures (DPKKG) course. The practicum was held in Lecture Room H1, 3rd Floor, Soetatmi Suryo Building, involving 150 third-semester undergraduate students (Class of 2023) and supported by student assistants from clinical dentistry and Oral Medicine specialist residents.

The seven-day practicum was divided into four major groups, further split into ten smaller groups, each consisting of three to four students. Students received direct guidance from Prof. Dr. Dewi Agustina, M.D.Sc., M.D.Sc., and Drg. Elastria Widita, M.Sc., Ph.D., from the Department of Oral Medicine, along with assistants from clinical dentistry and residents.

The practicum aimed to train students in conducting subjective examinations, including demographic data collection, completion of the Self-administered Medical History Questionnaire, Review of Systems (ROS), and the use of related medical instruments. Through an interactive learning approach, students practiced examinations under the guidance and evaluation of facilitators.

According to Prof. Dewi, "Subjective examination is a crucial first step in diagnosing oral diseases. Through this activity, students can refine their skills in gathering accurate patient information."

Besides providing practical skills, this activity also supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly: Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) – by enhancing the competence of future healthcare professionals; Goal 4 (Quality Education) – by delivering high-quality education through practicum; and Goal 17 (Partnerships to Achieve the Goal) – through collaboration between lecturers, assistants, and residents.

"We hope this program continues and provides significant benefits for students in their clinical practice," said Drg. Elastria.

Participants also expressed positive feedback, with one student stating, "This activity greatly helps us understand the essential steps in subjective examination. The guidance from lecturers and assistants is invaluable, and we feel more confident in applying this knowledge in clinical practice."

Through this successful practicum, students are expected to be better prepared for clinical challenges and deliver high-quality dental healthcare services to the community. This initiative demonstrates FKG UGM's commitment to equipping students with essential knowledge and skills to support their future careers.
