MBO Perio Practicum: Introduction to Periodontal Surgical Instrument

On 10 October 2024, the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), conducted a practicum focusing on the introduction of surgical instruments used in periodontology at the Phantom DLC Lab on the second floor. This event aimed to enhance the skills of dental students and professionals, ensuring they are well-prepared to provide affordable and effective dental care.

Students were introduced to various surgical instruments, starting with surgical blades. The session covered blades numbered 11, 12, 12D, 15, and 16C, each designed for specific surgical procedures. Instructors explained the unique features and applications of each blade in periodontal surgery. This knowledge is crucial for students to ensure they can select the appropriate instruments for different procedures.

Besides blades, the practicum included demonstrations on safely holding and attaching blades to blade holders. Instructors emphasized the importance of proper instrument handling to prevent injuries and ensure patient safety. This aspect of training is essential in promoting a culture of safety and responsibility among future dental professionals.

The session also covered rasps, instruments used to retract soft tissues during surgery. Participants learned how to use these instruments effectively to improve visibility and access to surgical sites. Other instruments discussed included universal and Gracey curettes, essential for scaling and root planing, fundamental procedures in treating periodontal disease.

The event also featured segments on tissue forceps and needle holders. Participants learned how to handle soft tissues gently and safely, which is crucial in minimizing trauma during surgical procedures. Instructors highlighted the importance of precision and caution in periodontal surgery, as these factors significantly impact patient recovery and outcomes.

With a focus on affordable education and practicum, this event contributes to developing skilled dental practitioners who are prepared to address periodontal disease challenges. This initiative is a step forward in achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4, which promotes access to quality education, ultimately benefiting the wider community.
