On Thursday, 10 October 2024, the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), held a practicum focusing on MBO Periodontal, specifically Occlusal Adjustment, a crucial aspect of dental education. Conducted in the Phantom Lab of the DLC building, this practicum aimed to enhance the understanding and skills of fifth-semester dental students in occlusion, which is essential for providing high-quality dental care. This initiative aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4, which emphasizes quality education for all.
During the practicum, students were expected to demonstrate and explain the use of articulating paper on models, perform occlusal adjustments, and evaluate the outcomes of these procedures. By providing state-of-the-art facilities and resources, the Phantom DLC aims to create an inclusive learning environment that supports the diverse needs of its students. This commitment to accessibility is essential in addressing inequalities in dental education and ensuring that future dental professionals are well-prepared to serve their communities.
Students learned the principles of Occlusal Adjustment, including the importance of achieving balanced occlusion for optimal dental function. They practiced various techniques, such as using articulating paper, to assess and adjust occlusal surfaces. This hands-on experience is critical in developing the skills necessary to diagnose and treat occlusal issues in patients. The practicum was supervised by experienced lecturers, supported by teaching assistants, ensuring a comprehensive learning experience.
The essential tools and materials for this practicum included diagnostic kits, high-speed handpieces, diamond burs, sterile cotton, and articulating paper. These tools are vital for students to effectively engage in the learning process and gain practical experience in a controlled environment. The emphasis on practical skills reflects FKG UGM’s dedication to producing competent dental professionals.
This activity aligns with Sustainable Development Goal 4, which promotes inclusive and equitable quality education and lifelong learning opportunities for all. By ensuring that all students have access to quality education and skill development, we contribute to a future where high-quality dental care is accessible to all members of society. The Occlusal Adjustment Practicum is a step toward achieving this goal, demonstrating the institution's commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
This practicum also serves as a platform for students to collaborate and share knowledge, fostering a sense of community among future dental professionals. The collaborative approach not only enhances learning but also prepares students to work effectively in various healthcare settings. By emphasizing teamwork and communication, the practicum helps students develop essential soft skills for their future careers.
The MBO Periodontal Practicum on Occlusal Adjustment represents a significant step toward improving dental education and ensuring that future professionals are equipped to provide quality care. By focusing on practical skills and inclusive education, the institution is making progress toward achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in terms of educational accessibility and healthcare services.
