Over 140 sixth-semester dental students from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) participated in the Oral Surgery Management 2 practicum, focusing on incision and suturing techniques, held on 10-11 June 2024, at the Preclinical Laboratory of the OEFC Building.
The practicum aimed to provide students with an understanding of various instruments used in incision and suturing procedures.
Before starting the practicum, students received an explanation of the basic principles of suturing, including safe handling of sharp instruments, such as not holding sharp tools with bare hands and disposing of single-use sharp instruments in safety box.
During the activities, students were taught how to perform incisions on models and practice various types of sutures, including simple interrupted, simple continuous, continuous locked stitch, vertical mattress, horizontal mattress, continuous mattress, and figure-of-eight sutures.
Additionally, students learned about the indications for suturing, which include tooth extraction with a flap, extraction involving significant trauma or multiple teeth, extraction in patients with bleeding risks, and management of new lacerations in the soft tissues of the oral cavity.
