Dental Hygiene Practicum I: Subjective Examination

Yogyakarta, 30 August 2024 – Third-semester students of the Dental Hygiene Study Program at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) participated in Dental Hygiene Practicum I with the topic “Subjective Examination” at the Soetatmi Suryo Dental Unit Laboratory. This practicum was supervised by the responsible lecturer, Christia Aye W.V., S.Kp.G., MDSc.

This practicum aims to train students in conducting subjective examinations by completing the elements of a client’s medical history. The elements examined include client identity, chief complaints, current illness, medical history, social history, dental health history, and family health history. Before the activity began, students were required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) such as lab coats, masks, headcaps, and gloves.

After participating in this activity, students are expected to relate the client’s medical history to their health status to develop dental hygiene care plans, prevent diseases, and promote health. The learning outcomes include:

  1. Compiling a comprehensive client medical history.
  2. Explaining the relevance of medical history to the client’s health status.
  3. Documenting important findings using appropriate terminology in the examination sheet.

This practicum is part of UGM’s Faculty of Dentistry’s efforts to support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being and Goal 4: Quality Education. This activity aims to produce graduates who are competent in providing high-quality dental health care relevant to community needs.

With the skills taught, students are expected to contribute to improving public health quality while supporting dental and oral disease prevention programs in Indonesia. This practicum serves as a concrete step in shaping professional and ethical healthcare workers.
