Physiology Practicum: Blood Pressure Measurement

On Tuesday, 19 November 2024, the Integrated Laboratory on the 4th floor of the DLC hosted a Skills Lab on Blood Pressure Measurement for dental students. This practicum is part of the curriculum, focusing on homeostasis and its clinical relevance, equipping students with clinical skills from an early stage.

This Skills Lab is designed to provide hands-on experience in blood pressure measurement, a critical component of the circulatory system. Understanding blood pressure is essential for diagnosing various health conditions, making this training crucial for future healthcare professionals. Students were introduced to the necessary tools for the procedure, including stethoscopes and sphygmomanometers, which are fundamental in clinical practice.

To enhance learning, students were divided into small groups, ensuring close attention and effective instruction. Each group was guided by assistants who demonstrated the correct technique for measuring blood pressure using a sphygmomanometer. This hands-on approach enabled students to actively engage in the learning process.

After the demonstration, students were encouraged to practice the technique on one another, fostering a collaborative learning environment. Instructors provided real-time feedback, ensuring that students acquired the skill correctly. This practical approach not only enhanced their learning experience but also emphasized the importance of teamwork in healthcare.

By mastering blood pressure measurement, students are expected to be better prepared to handle patients and contribute to comprehensive patient care. This initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), by promoting better healthcare practices.

The Skills Lab on Blood Pressure Measurement marks a significant step in dental education. Providing access to clinical skills aligns with SDG 4 (Quality Education), preparing students for their future roles in the healthcare sector.

Commitment to quality education and practicum is essential for nurturing a new generation of competent healthcare professionals. This Skills Lab not only enriches the educational experience of dental students but also contributes to broader goals in public health and sustainable development. By investing in the education and training of future healthcare providers, we take a significant step toward achieving SDGs and ensuring a healthier future for all.
