On Monday, 18 November 2024, the Faculty of Dentistry at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) conducted a practicum focused on debridement, a crucial procedure in dental and medical practice. The practicum took place in the Preclinical Laboratory at the OECF Building. This activity aimed to equip seventh-semester undergraduate dental students with practical skills while also enhancing their access to education in the healthcare sector. The ability to perform procedures such as debridement is essential for future dentists, ensuring that all students have the opportunity to learn these skills to improve community health outcomes.
Lecturers emphasized the importance of hands-on experience in medical education, as it allows students to apply theoretical knowledge in real-life situations. This approach not only enhances their learning experience but also prepares them for the challenges they will face in their professional careers. By engaging in practicum, students can bridge the gap between theory and practice, which is vital in the healthcare field.
During the practicum, students were encouraged to ask questions and seek clarification on techniques and best practices. This interactive environment fostered a collaborative learning atmosphere, enabling students to learn from each other and their instructors. It reinforced the idea that education is a shared journey, promoting teamwork and communication skills that are essential in healthcare settings.
The Clinical Emergency Practicum on Debridement reflects FKG UGM's commitment to supporting Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, which aims to provide quality education and training for future healthcare professionals. By focusing on essential skills and promoting access to education, this program seeks to produce competent and confident graduates ready to serve their communities. The practicum not only enhances their technical skills but also highlights the importance of affordable healthcare and education in strengthening the healthcare system.
As part of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), this initiative aligns with Goal 3—to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. By equipping students with the necessary skills and knowledge, FKG UGM contributes to developing a strong healthcare workforce capable of meeting the population’s health needs.
This practicum marks a significant step in preparing dental students for their future roles in the healthcare sector. Emphasizing debridement and wound management not only enhances their technical skills but also underscores the importance of education access in shaping a new generation of skilled healthcare providers. This initiative is crucial in building a healthcare system that prioritizes affordable medicine and quality education, ultimately leading to better health outcomes for all.
