Options and Solutions for Dental Care for Patients with Filling Material Allergies

Patients with allergies to dental filling materials require special attention when selecting the appropriate treatment. Allergies to certain materials, such as amalgam, composite, or specific metals, can cause irritation, pain, or even systemic allergic reactions. Therefore, dentists typically conduct a thorough evaluation before deciding which filling material to use.

Safe Filling Materials for Allergy-Prone Patients

  1. Glass Ionomer
This material tends to be safe as it is made from glass powder and acrylic acid. Glass ionomer is often used for small cavities and has a low allergy risk.
  2. Porcelain or Ceramic
These fillings are ideal for patients allergic to metal materials. In addition to being durable, porcelain closely resembles the natural color of teeth and does not trigger allergic reactions.
  3. Composite Without Acrylic Resin
Although generally safe, some patients may be allergic to the resin in composite fillings. Therefore, resin-free composite materials may be an alternative.

Dental Care Steps Gigi

Before performing a dental filling, the dentist will:

  • Conduc Allergy Testing
A skin allergy test may be performed to ensure the filling material is safe for the patient.
  • Use Special Filling Methods
Indirect restorations, such as fillings made using molds, can be used to ensure the filling material does not come into direct contact with sensitive tissue.

Cost and Availability

The cost of dental treatment largely depends on the material used. For instance, porcelain or ceramic fillings are generally more expensive than amalgam. Additionally, fillings made from gold alloy or special allergy-friendly materials also incur higher costs.

For patients with filling material allergies, consulting with a dentist is essential. Modern technology allows the selection of safe and suitable filling materials that maintain dental health without triggering allergic reactions. This also contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being) and Goal 4 (Quality Education).
