Orthodontic Treatment in Patients with Periodontal Disease

Orthodontic treatment is generally considered a solution for correcting irregularities of the teeth and jaws. However, this approach requires more careful attention and management in patients with periodontal disease. Periodontal disease, which includes gum infections and damage to the supporting tissues of the teeth, can affect the success of orthodontic treatment and overall oral health. Therefore, understanding the interaction between these two conditions is essential for effective and safe treatment.

Comprehensive Evaluation

A comprehensive evaluation of the patient's periodontal health is crucial before starting orthodontic treatment. Dentists need to diagnose the severity of periodontal disease and plan appropriate interventions. Typically, patients showing symptoms of periodontal disease, such as gum bleeding or tooth loss, must undergo periodontal treatment first. This treatment may involve professional dental cleaning, scaling, and root planing to reduce inflammation and improve gum health before proceeding with orthodontic care.

Starting Orthodontic Treatment

Once the periodontal condition is stable, orthodontic treatment can begin. During this phase, the orthodontist will design a treatment plan that considers the patient's periodontal health. The use of orthodontic appliances may need to be adjusted to avoid excessive pressure on the gums and supporting tissues. The process of tooth movement during orthodontic treatment must be done carefully to prevent further damage to tissues already affected by periodontal disease. This may include more frequent monitoring and quicker adjustments to orthodontic devices.

Maintain Oral Hygiene

During treatment, it is important for patients to maintain good oral hygiene. Patients with periodontal disease are at higher risk of complications during orthodontic treatment, so they need to be reminded to brush and floss regularly. Educating patients on proper oral care techniques is essential to ensure they can actively participate in maintaining their dental and gum health. Active patient involvement in their care can significantly contribute to the success of orthodontic treatment.

Follow-Up Monitoring

After completing orthodontic treatment, ongoing monitoring of the patient's periodontal health is still necessary. Periodontal disease can recur if oral hygiene is not maintained. Therefore, regular dental visits for check-ups and cleanings are important even after treatment ends. By fostering communication between the patient, dentist, and orthodontist, the risk of periodontal disease recurrence can be minimized, and oral health can be well-maintained.

***

Orthodontic treatment in patients with periodontal disease requires an integrated approach and greater attention. By incorporating appropriate preventive and treatment measures, patients can achieve optimal results from orthodontic care without compromising their periodontal health. Collaboration between the medical team and patients is key to achieving this goal, ensuring that all parties work together towards a healthy and beautiful smile. This also supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being, and Goal 4: Quality Education.
