The use of dentures has become a solution for many people who have lost teeth, whether partially or completely. However, to maintain comfort and function, proper care is essential. Well-maintained dentures not only enhance user comfort but also help maintain overall oral health.
Clean Regularly
The first step in denture care is cleaning them regularly. Just like natural teeth, dentures can accumulate plaque and food particles. Cleaning dentures at least twice a day with a special denture brush or a soft-bristled toothbrush can help prevent dirt buildup. It's best to avoid using regular toothpaste, as its abrasive content can damage the denture surface. Instead, use a denture cleaner that is gentle and safe for the material.
Maintain Oral Hygiene
In addition to cleaning dentures, users should also maintain overall oral hygiene. This includes brushing the tongue, gums, and the roof of the mouth to remove bacteria and prevent bad breath. Soaking dentures in a special cleaning solution every night is also important. This helps keep the dentures moist, preserves their shape, and kills bacteria that may cling to them.
Regular Dental Visits
Denture users are also advised to have regular dental checkups. Routine examinations can help detect issues such as gum irritation or ill-fitting dentures that may need adjustment. Oral conditions can change over time, especially if there is bone loss or changes in gum structure, which may require denture adjustments to keep them comfortable and functional.
Avoid Hard and Sticky Foods
Avoiding hard or sticky foods is another important aspect of denture care. These types of foods can damage dentures or cause them to become loose. Additionally, it’s best to avoid habits like biting hard objects, such as pencils or nails, which can cause dentures to crack or break.
With proper care, dentures can last longer and provide comfort to their users. Maintaining cleanliness and following routine care practices will help preserve denture quality and overall oral health, enabling users to enjoy food and smile with confidence. This also supports the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being.
