The oral microbiota consists of various microorganisms that reside in the mouth and play a crucial role in maintaining dental and periodontal health. The balance of these microorganisms significantly influences the risk of developing periodontal diseases—infectious conditions that affect the supporting structures of the teeth.
In his professorial inaugural lecture titled Preventing Periodontal Disease by Maintaining the Balance of Oral Microbiome and Manipulating the Tooth Surface Environment, Prof. drg. Suryono, SH., MM., Ph.D., explained that dental health is closely linked to microbiome balance. When this balance is disrupted, pathogenic microbes can proliferate, potentially leading to periodontal disease.
Oral Microbiota and Dental Health
Oral microbiota serve as a defense against pathogens. Beneficial microbes such as Streptococcus salivarius and Lactobacillus spp. can inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria. Maintaining this balance is essential to prevent tooth decay and gum inflammation. Diet, oral hygiene, and medication use are among the factors that influence microbiota composition.
Periodontal Disease
Periodontal disease occurs when pathogenic bacteria infect gum tissue. It often begins as gingivitis and, if left untreated, can progress to periodontitis, which may ultimately lead to tooth loss. Maintaining a healthy oral microbiome through proper oral care, a nutritious diet, and avoiding imbalances—such as those caused by smoking—is vital for prevention.
Maintaining Microbiome Balance
To prevent periodontal disease, maintaining good oral health practices is essential. Key prevention strategies include:
- Maintaining Oral Hygiene: Brushing and flossing regularly to remove food particles and plaque.
- Balanced Diet: Consuming nutritious foods that support oral health.
- Routine Dental Checkups: Visiting the dentist regularly for professional cleanings and evaluations.
The implementation of these strategies can help maintain the balance of the oral microbiota and prevent periodontal disease, ultimately contributing to overall oral health.
By maintaining a balanced oral microbiota, we can take effective preventive measures against periodontal disease and ensure optimal dental health.
