The Role of Coconut Oil Compounds in Maintaining Oral and Dental Health

Virgin coconut oil (VCO) has long been known for its various health benefits, including its role in maintaining oral and dental health. The primary active compound in virgin coconut oil is lauric acid, which has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties. These properties make VCO effective in reducing bacterial levels in the oral cavity, preventing plaque formation, and maintaining healthy gums.

Reduction of Microorganisms in the Oral Cavity

A study conducted by a UGM Faculty of Dentistry student, Wasiaturrosyida, under the guidance of drg. Putri Kusuma Wardani M., M.Kes., Sp.KGA (K), and Dr. drg. Indah Titien S., S.U., Sp.KGA (K), investigated the effects of gargling with virgin coconut oil on the number of microorganisms in the mouths of children aged 10–12. The study found that rinsing with VCO significantly reduced the number of microorganisms. This was indicated by the increased time for white deposits to form after rinsing with VCO compared to distilled water (aquadest), suggesting a reduction in oral microbial levels.

Inhibition of Streptococcus alpha haemolyticus Bacterial Growth

Another study by UGM Faculty of Dentistry student Anugerah Pekerti A, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. drg. Juni Handajani, M.Kes., Ph.D., explored the effects of VCO mouth rinsing on the number of Streptococcus alpha haemolyticuscolonies in dental plaque. The results showed a significant reduction in the number of these bacterial colonies, although the reduction was less than that observed with the use of 0.2% chlorhexidine gluconate.

Other Benefits of Coconut Oil for Oral and Dental Health

Beyond the studies mentioned above, other sources also highlight the benefits of coconut oil for oral and dental care. Daily oil pulling using coconut oil for 10–15 minutes can help reduce oral bacterial levels, including Streptococcus mutans, one of the main contributors to plaque buildup and tooth decay. Coconut oil may also help reduce bad breath, prevent cavities, and decrease the risk of gum inflammation.

How to Use Coconut Oil for Oral and Dental Health

To utilize coconut oil for oral care, you can practice the oil pullingtechnique. Simply take one tablespoon of coconut oil and swish it around your mouth for 10–15 minutes before spitting it out. Afterward, rinse your mouth with warm water and brush your teeth as usual. Regular oil pulling can help maintain oral cleanliness and health.

With its wide range of proven benefits, virgin coconut oil can be a natural alternative for oral and dental care. However, it is important to maintain good oral hygiene by brushing your teeth regularly and visiting the dentist periodically to ensure long-term oral health. This practice also supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production), and SDG 15 (Life on Land).
