Scaling, or tartar cleaning, is an important procedure in maintaining oral health. However, quite a number of patients experience gum inflammation or swelling after the procedure. This inflammation is generally temporary but still requires special attention to prevent it from developing into a more serious condition.
Why Do Gums Become Inflamed after Scaling?
Post-scaling gum inflammation usually occurs because the tartar cleaning process removes plaque and biofilm layers that previously covered the root surface of the teeth. When these layers are removed, gums that were previously inflamed or loosely attached to the teeth become exposed and more sensitive. In addition, if the patient’s gum condition already involved gingivitis (gum inflammation), the likelihood of post-scaling inflammation is higher.
Healing Process of Gums
After scaling, the gums undergo a healing process called gingival epithelial maturation. This process is marked by the regeneration and thickening of gum epithelial tissue so it becomes strong and healthy again. Recovery time may vary depending on the severity of previous gingivitis, the patient’s oral hygiene, and the body’s response to treatment.
A study from Universitas Gadjah Mada highlighted this process through an innovative approach using natural materials to support gum tissue recovery.
The Role of Edible Bird’s Nest Extract in Healing
Research conducted by FKG UGM student Eufrasia Claudia, under the supervision of Prof. Dr. drg. Regina TC. Tandelilin, M.Sc., and Prof. Dr. drg. Juni Handajani, M.Kes., Ph.D., titled Gingival Epithelial Maturation in Patients with Moderate Gingivitis after Gargling with 2.5% Edible Bird’s Nest Extract, demonstrated the benefits of this natural material in accelerating gum inflammation healing.
Edible bird’s nest extract contains epidermal growth factor (EGF), which plays a role in gingival epithelial regeneration, thereby accelerating tissue maturation after inflammation. This finding offers new hope that natural ingredients such as bird’s nest can serve as adjunctive therapy post-scaling, particularly in patients with moderate gingivitis. EGF stimulates epithelial cell proliferation, speeds up healing, and reduces the risk of further complications such as periodontitis.
How to Care for Gums after Scaling
To prevent or reduce inflammation after scaling, experts suggest the following tips:
- Avoid hard and spicy foods that may irritate the gums.
- Maintain oral hygiene by brushing teeth gently with a soft-bristled toothbrush.
- Consult a dentist if inflammation lasts longer than a week or is accompanied by severe pain.

Gum inflammation after scaling is a common and usually temporary condition. However, understanding the healing process and using natural interventions such as edible bird’s nest extract can accelerate tissue regeneration and provide greater comfort for patients. The use of natural extracts containing EGF is a potential breakthrough in speeding up gingival epithelial recovery. This shows that dental health care continues to evolve alongside scientific research advancements in dentistry.
