Preparation of Qualitative Accreditation Documents for the Oral Medicine Specialist Program, LAM-PTKes, Faculty of Dentistry UGM

“If we trace it back, the establishment of the Oral Medicine Specialist Program had actually been mandated 40 years ago. But it was only in 2024 that we were finally able to establish it and start admitting new students in the 2024–2025 odd semester. At present, we have five students in the first cohort, and three more will join in the next cohort.” – Prof. Dr. drg. Dewi Agustina, MD.Sc. –

In her remarks, Prof. Dr. drg. Dewi Agustina, MD.Sc., Head of the Department of Oral Medicine, Faculty of Dentistry UGM, expressed her highest appreciation for the presence of all participants who came to support the Oral Medicine Program in preparing its qualitative accreditation documents. The Oral Medicine Specialist Program began in 2023–2024, having first received approval from the Collegium of Oral Medicine, followed by the approval of the UGM Senate. Later, approval was also granted by the Indonesian Medical Council (KKI), represented by Prof. Melani and the KKI team.

At that stage, the program had technically been allowed to open, but UGM required the department to meet the minimum activity standards of LAM-PTKes. Thus, FKG UGM was legally authorized to open the Oral Medicine Specialist Program. Now, however, the program must achieve one more accreditation status—becoming fully accredited by LAM-PTKes—so that it can continue to admit students. For this reason, the Department of Oral Medicine earnestly hopes for support from the various coordinators, many of whom are present today, with the confidence that all members of the academic community have the expertise needed to support this qualitative accreditation.

“I believe that you already have comprehensive supporting data, given your experience in accompanying accreditation processes for many programs at FKG UGM. Therefore, we ask for your strong support in providing us with supporting data, both from the program management units and from the faculty as a whole. By December 2025, we aim to have submitted a final and complete document. This FGD meeting will be followed up with additional workshops, and the expected outcome is that all supporting data will be ready.”

In her remarks, Prof. drg. Rosa Amalia, M.Kes., Ph.D., Vice Dean for Academic Affairs at FKG UGM, noted: “There are some issues in the qualitative documents that still need to be addressed, such as safety—physical safety, psychological safety—not only for students but also for lecturers. Another point is patient management policies. In oral medicine, many patients suffer from particular conditions, and how we collect and manage data for research or publication purposes is something that must be carefully formulated. Extracurricular or non-formal learning activities also need to be considered.”

The Student Association of Dental Education (HMPKG) also contributed. Dr. Hendri suggested simple initiatives such as creating podcasts, where specialist residents collaborate with the student executive board (BEM), as well as organizing open houses. In December, all study programs will hold open houses to attract prospective students from outside.

“I believe that Oral Medicine already has many experts, especially regarding the curriculum, so this should not be an issue. The accreditation documents we reviewed contained a substantial amount of information. Hopefully, Oral Medicine can develop a program that is distinctive and superior to others,” he added.
