The Importance of Dental Care for Patients with Heart Disease

Oral health is closely linked to heart health. Research shows that dental and gum diseases, particularly periodontitis, can increase the risk of heart disease. This is due to bacteria from gum infections that can enter the bloodstream, causing inflammation in blood vessels, and worsening cardiovascular conditions. Therefore, maintaining dental health is crucial, especially for patients with a history of heart disease.

Patients with heart disease must be more vigilant about their oral health. Untreated dental or gum infections can trigger infective endocarditis, which is an inflammation of the inner lining of the heart. This condition is very dangerous and can lead to serious complications. Therefore, preventive measures such as regular dental care and maintaining oral hygiene are steps that should not be overlooked

Moreover, treatment for heart disease often involves medications that can affect oral health, such as blood thinners, which increase the risk of gum bleeding. It is essential for patients to inform their dentist about their health condition and the medications they are taking before undergoing dental procedures. Collaboration between dentists and cardiologists is necessary to ensure that patients receive safe and effective care.

Adopting a healthy lifestyle also plays a significant role in maintaining both dental and heart health. Avoiding smoking, reducing sugar intake, and brushing teeth at least twice a day are simple steps that can help prevent dental and gum problems. For patients with heart disease, regular dental check-ups every six months are highly recommended to detect and address issues early.

Good dental care not only helps maintain oral health but also contributes to the prevention of cardiovascular complications. By maintaining oral health, patients with heart disease can reduce the risk of harmful infections and improve their overall quality of life. This also supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being. Therefore, never underestimate the importance of maintaining good dental health, especially for those with heart health conditions.
