The Importance of Mouthguard Use for Athletes to Protect Their Teeth

A mouthguard is an essential protective device for athletes involved in high-contact sports such as football, boxing, basketball, and hockey. It is specifically designed to protect the teeth, gums, and jaw from injuries caused by impacts or falls.

Wearing a mouthguard during sports not only prevents broken or chipped teeth but also reduces the risk of damage to the soft tissues of the mouth, such as the gums and tongue. Dental injuries often require expensive and complex treatments, making prevention through mouthguard use a wise step in maintaining oral health.

Beyond dental protection, a mouthguard also helps to absorb impact on the jaw, potentially preventing serious injuries such as jaw fractures or mild concussions. For athletes, using a mouthguard means added protection without compromising their performance during a game.

According to Prof. Dr. drg. Haryo Mustiko Dipoyono, MS, Sp.Pros (K) in his research on the use of mouthguards in the early treatment of temporomandibular disorders using magnetic resonance imaging, choosing the right mouthguard is crucial. Custom-made mouthguards designed by dentists offer better comfort and protection compared to generic mouthguards available in stores. With the proper fit, athletes can move freely without discomfort from the protective device.

Recognizing the risk of sports-related injuries, using a mouthguard is no longer just an option but a necessity for athletes who want to maintain their dental and oral health. Through this simple preventive measure, they can reduce long-term injury risks while improving their game performance.

The use of mouthguards also supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly: SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, by preventing oral injuries and enhancing athletes' quality of life; SDG 4: Quality Education, by raising awareness about the importance of dental protection in sports; and SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, by promoting the use of high-quality, safe, and durable mouthguards.
