Early dental checkups are essential in maintaining children’s oral health and fostering lifelong good habits. Many parents still believe that baby teeth don’t require special care as they will eventually be replaced by permanent teeth. However, baby teeth play a crucial role in helping children chew food properly, speak clearly, and maintain adequate space for permanent teeth to grow. If baby teeth are damaged or decayed, this can lead to pain and infections that may affect a child’s overall health.
Early Detection of Dental Issues
Based on Educational activities conducted by the Faculty of Dentistry (FKG) at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) at SDN Kotagede, Yogyakarta, revealed the significant positive impact of dental checkups and education at an early age. The program involved lecturers and dental students who provided counseling on the importance of oral health care from a young age. Through direct examinations, students were able to detect dental issues such as cavities or gum diseases, which parents often overlook. Findings from these examinations indicated that many children had cavities requiring further treatment. Early detection serves as a critical first step in preventing more severe conditions and promotes better oral health among children.
Reducing Fear and Anxiety
Regular dental visits from an early age help children become accustomed to the clinical environment, reducing fear or anxiety during future checkups. Initiatives like those by FKG UGM, which combine examinations with interactive education, help children feel more at ease. Furthermore, dentists and dental students taught students the proper brushing techniques, how to use dental floss, and the importance of avoiding sugary foods that can cause cavities. Such education plays a vital role in instilling early awareness of good oral hygiene practices.
Supporting Healthy Growth and Development
Programs like the one at SDN Kotagede also emphasize the long-term benefits of maintaining oral health from a young age on children’s growth and development. Children who develop good oral hygiene habits tend to have healthier teeth and a lower risk of oral diseases in the future. Routine checkups also allow for early detection of jaw growth issues or misaligned teeth, enabling preventive or orthodontic care when needed.
This program, initiated by FKG UGM, aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being and Goal 4: Quality Education. Through this initiative, FKG UGM aims to provide high-quality dental health education, particularly for elementary school children, to increase awareness and promote good oral hygiene practices. With parental support and ongoing educational programs, children can establish a strong foundation for lifelong oral health, reducing the risk of more severe dental issues in the future.
Regular dental checkups and early education enable parents and children to work together to maintain optimal oral health. This not only ensures a beautiful and confident smile but also supports overall physical health. Therefore, routine dental checkups from an early age are a long-term investment in the health and well-being of our children.
