Tooth loss can lead to a variety of oral health problems if left untreated. One of the most common effects is the shifting of adjacent teeth, which can disrupt jaw alignment and bite structure. This tooth movement often occurs due to the empty space left by the missing tooth, prompting the remaining teeth to drift in an attempt to fill the gap.
If not addressed, tooth shifting may result in changes to the jaw joint and lead to temporomandibular joint disorders (TMJ). Research conducted by Windriyatna, a student at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), under the supervision of Drg. Erwan Sugiatno, MS, Sp.Pros(K), Ph.D., and Drg. M. Th. Esti Tjahjanti, M.Kes., Sp.Pros(K), indicates that the loss of posterior teeth—whether in the upper or lower jaw—can contribute to TMJ disorders. This is linked to changes in the inclination angle of the articular eminence, which can affect the overall function of the jaw joint. TMJ disorders may result in jaw pain, headaches, and difficulty chewing or speaking.
To prevent tooth shifting, several measures can be taken, including the use of dentures, dental implants, or dental bridges. These treatments not only restore the function of missing teeth but also help maintain the proper position of the remaining teeth. Regular dental check-ups are also essential to monitor the condition of the teeth and jaw and to prevent long-term complications due to tooth loss.
It is also important to maintain good oral hygiene and care for the remaining teeth. Establishing a healthy routine of brushing, flossing, and maintaining a balanced diet can reduce the risk of further tooth loss. These efforts support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 on good health and well-being, SDG 10 on reducing inequalities in access to dental care, and SDG 12 on responsible consumption and use of dental materials. If you are experiencing tooth loss, consult your dentist promptly to receive the appropriate treatment and prevent further complications.
