Medan, 19-21 July 2024 – During the Periodontal Update 5 Seminar, which was conducted in a lively and familial atmosphere, Dr. Jessy Wijaya, MDSc., from Universitas Gadjah Mada, captivated the audience with her scientific presentation titled, "Combination of 10% Propolis and 0.8% Hyaluronic Acid Gel Accelerated Alveolar Bone Osteoblast Proliferation". This presentation is part of the research roadmap of Prof. drg. Suryono, SH., MM., Ph.D., and was conducted under the guidance of drg. Rezmelia Sari, MSc., Sp.Perio., SubSp. R.P.I.D (K).
Bone defects in cases of periodontitis often require a tissue regeneration approach involving the use of signaling molecules. Dr. Jessy explained that hyaluronic acid, with its hygroscopic-viscoelastic properties, can be easily applied to irregular defect areas. However, its limited antibacterial effect against periodontopathogenic bacteria poses a challenge. Therefore, the researchers combined hyaluronic acid with propolis, a natural substance known for its antimicrobial and osteogenic properties.
The research was conducted on MC3T3-E1 osteoblast cells cultured for 24 hours before treatment. Each group was incubated for 1, 3, and 7 days, followed by quantification using a spectrophotometer. The results showed that the combination of propolis gel and hyaluronic acid significantly stimulated higher osteoblast proliferation compared to other groups.
“The combination of propolis and hyaluronic acid has a synergistic effect that enhances the release of signaling molecules, thereby accelerating osteoblast proliferation,” Dr. Jessy explained during her presentation. This research is part of her studies at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada, and is currently in the process of publication to ensure a broader impact.
These findings open up significant opportunities for developing tissue regeneration therapies for periodontitis cases, with the hope of providing effective and innovative solutions in dental practice.
drg. Jessy Wijaya’s presentation received high praise, earning her the first-place award in the Research Category from the seminar judges and organizers. “The active participation of students in presenting their innovative results at this national seminar reaffirms the commitment of the Periodontics Study Program, Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada, to encourage research innovation that is applicable and has a tangible impact on society,” said drg. Kwartarini Murdiastuti, Sp.Perio., SubSp.R.P.I.D (K), Head of the Study Program.
