Experiencing the PMDSU Program at FKG UGM

Pursuing graduate education at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) is a journey filled with both challenges and opportunities. As a PMDSU (Master's to Doctoral for Outstanding Graduates) scholarship awardee, Kadek Gede Putra Wibawa had the unique opportunity to complete both Master’s (S2) and Doctoral (S3) degrees within four years. This innovative program is designed to develop graduates who can conduct high-quality research, drive innovation, and make significant contributions to advancing knowledge and technology in dental medicine.

Throughout his academic journey, Kadek Gede Putra Wibawa delved deep into research in oral and dental health. FKG UGM offers state-of-the-art laboratory facilities and access to cutting-edge technology, significantly enriching students' learning experiences. The supportive academic environment also fosters collaboration between students and faculty, cultivating a strong culture of innovation and high-quality research.

Kadek highlights that one of the most valuable aspects of his experience was the mentorship from experienced professors. Their guidance was instrumental in shaping his research skills and deepening his understanding of complex dental health issues. The faculty's commitment to producing high-quality professionals is evident in their balanced approach to education, combining theoretical knowledge and practical applications.

In a recent seminar, Prof. Dr. drg. Widowati Siswomihardjo, M.S., emphasized the importance of research in the curriculum, stating: “Education at FKG UGM is not solely focused on research, but also on the importance of translating research findings into practical applications. It is essential that our discoveries are not only published in academic journals but also applied in ways that benefit society.”

This perspective aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being. The faculty's strong emphasis on research addressing real-world health challenges reflects its commitment to sustainable development. By equipping students with the necessary skills and knowledge, FKG UGM actively contributes to improving public health outcomes.

Beyond academic research, the PMDSU program encourages students to engage in community service initiatives. These experiences allow students to apply their research findings in practical settings, ensuring that their work has a tangible impact on public health. This hands-on approach demonstrates how academic pursuits can drive meaningful change in individuals’ lives and communities.

Throughout his time in the PMDSU program, Kadek Gede Putra Wibawa has been reminded of the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. Dental health challenges are often multifaceted, requiring insights from fields such as public health, policy-making, and education. FKG UGM fosters an environment where students are encouraged to think critically and collaborate across disciplines to address these issues effectively.

Kadek’s experience at FKG UGM has been transformative. The PMDSU program has not only provided him with advanced research knowledge and skills but has also instilled a sense of responsibility to contribute to society. By ensuring high-quality education, this program directly supports SDG 4: Quality Education, empowering scholars to make a lasting impact in their respective fields.
