Students from the Pediatric Dentistry Specialist Program at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), conducted an examination on pacifier usage habits among children at ABA Karangwaru Kindergarten on Tuesday, 19 November 2024. This initiative aimed to raise awareness among parents and teachers regarding the impact of pacifier use on children's dental and jaw development.
The event was attended by students, teachers, and parents, where residents provided education about the risks associated with pacifier habits, such as prolonged use or thumb-sucking. "These habits can affect dental alignment and jaw development, making early intervention necessary to prevent complications," explained Drg. Ayu Kristin, one of the participating residents.
During the examination, Drg. Arif Rahman Setyawan emphasized that uncontrolled pacifier use could lead to various dental health issues. "Parents need to be aware of the importance of monitoring their child's habits and seeking professional assistance if needed," he stated. The examination also provided an opportunity for parents to engage in direct discussions with professionals about their children's oral health.
This initiative represents a collaboration between ABA Karangwaru Kindergarten and pediatric dentistry residents from FKG UGM, highlighting the importance of community involvement in improving children's health. Such partnerships not only benefit the children directly but also strengthen community awareness about early childhood health.
The pacifier usage examination also contributes to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By promoting early oral health awareness, this activity supports SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 4 (Quality Education), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through collaborations between educational institutions and local communities.
