A team of pediatric dentistry residents from the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), conducted a dental examination and educational session at TK Islam Timuran, Yogyakarta, on 5 November 2024. The event involved residents drg. Arif Rahman, drg. Ayu Kristin, and drg. Dini, along with kindergarten students and teachers.
The initiative aimed to raise awareness about the long-term effects of prolonged pacifier use in children. During the education session, drg. Arif Rahman explained various issues that could arise, including dental growth disorders, jaw structure changes, and speech difficulties.
“Long-term pacifier use can lead to malocclusion, or improper tooth alignment. Therefore, it is crucial for parents to reduce this habit as early as possible,” said drg. Arif Rahman.
A lively interactive discussion, led by drg. Ayu Kristin, engaged both children and teachers. The children shared their experiences with pacifiers, while practical tips were provided to help them gradually stop the habit.
In addition to education, the residents conducted dental check-ups for each child. The examination process was designed to be enjoyable, ensuring a comfortable experience while also allowing dentists to provide health recommendations to parents.
This activity reflects FKG UGM's commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), Goal 4 (Quality Education), and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals). Through education and examinations, this initiative aims to reduce oral health risks in children and support their optimal growth and development.
