Free Denture Production in Community Service Activities

Prosthodontic residents participated in a community service event for free denture production held on 10-11 August 2024. The activity began with an initial examination to screen cases eligible for dentures, followed by dental impressions to obtain models of the patients' oral cavities. For patients requiring pre-prosthetic treatment, procedures such as dental fillings, extractions, and scaling had to be completed first. The denture-making process involved several stages, including the fabrication of the denture base, clasps, and artificial teeth placement. For more complex cases, additional sessions were necessary for bite height measurement and occlusion recording.

Before the finishing stage, a process called wax contouring was performed, shaping the wax model to resemble the patient’s gums. This initiative runs from August to September 2024, with the goal of completing the dentures, which will be symbolically inserted on 28 September 2024.

drg. Surdin stated, "Denture production requires not only sufficient theoretical knowledge but also skilled hands and adequate experience to ensure optimal outcomes for patients."

This program aligns with Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, which focuses on quality education. Through this community service initiative, the Faculty of Dentistry at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) is committed to supporting high-quality practical education that emphasizes not only theoretical knowledge but also essential technical skills for residents while providing direct benefits to the community.
