Yogyakarta, 2-4 September 2024 – The Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) has conducted Basic Life Support (BLS) training for students in the Specialist Dentist Education Program (PPDGS) class of 2024.
The training took place at Prof. Soedomo Dental and Oral Hospital (RSGM UGM). This training is mandatory for all specialist dental education students from various study programs at FKG UGM, including residents from the Oral Diseases Specialist Program.
The Basic Life Support training aims to prepare future medical professionals, particularly for handling medical emergencies such as cardiac and respiratory arrest. The training agenda included: Day 1: Online theoretical sessions, Day 2: Hands-on BLS practice under the supervision of trained doctors, Day 3: Practical and written examinations.
According to Dr. Rahmadani Sasongko, the training was designed to ensure that participants are well-prepared to handle emergencies at RSGM Prof. Soedomo.
“Specialist dental students are among the healthcare providers working in RSGM UGM Prof. Soedomo. They are expected to manage emergency cases, especially cardiac and respiratory arrest, either independently or as part of a primary Code Blue team before secondary Code Blue responders take over. This helps minimize the risk of more severe or unexpected incidents,” he explained.
Participants appreciated the training as a valuable experience to enhance their medical skills.
“This training is very beneficial and has given us confidence in dealing with emergency situations,” said one of the participants.
Beyond improving technical competence, the training also supports Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly: Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being, by ensuring that medical professionals have the necessary skills to provide quality healthcare; and Goal 4: Quality Education, by providing comprehensive and relevant learning opportunities for students.
By holding this BLS training, FKG UGM aims to not only improve the preparedness and confidence of participants in handling emergencies but also strengthen its role in producing competent and responsive medical professionals to meet community needs.
