Juan Rafael Sandico Silva DMD, Cert PERIO, MDS, Adv Dip, M.Perio, a periodontics expert from the University of the Philippines, delivered a lecture titled "Threading Informed Consent in Dentistry” on Wednesday, 17 July 2024, at the ABC Room of the Dental Learning Center (DLC).
The lecture was attended by 40 participants, including lecturers and residents of the Periodontics Specialist Program at FKG UGM. The aim of the expert lecture was to provide a comprehensive understanding of informed consent in dentistry, with a specific focus on periodontics.
Dr. drg. Ahmad Syaify, Sp.Perio, SubSp. R.P.I.D (K), had the opportunity to open the lecture. He emphasized that informed consent is crucial in healthcare services. A clear informed consent process ensures that patients feel more involved in their care and can make well-informed decisions.
Informed consent is a fundamental right for patients to receive complete and accurate information before undergoing medical procedures. This information includes the purpose of the procedure, the methods to be used, expected benefits, potential risks, and available treatment alternatives. Understanding this information allows patients to give their consent knowingly and voluntarily.
“Informed consent is not just a formality but a way to show respect for the patient,” Juan stated during his presentation. “By providing comprehensive and clear information about a treatment or medical procedure, we engage patients in actively participating in their own health care.”
This event marks the beginning of further collaboration between the Periodontics Specialist Program at FKG UGM and the University of the Philippines in the fields of education, research, and community service.
