UGM Orthodontics Breaks MURI Record for the Largest Simultaneous Braces Installation by Orthodontists

Yogyakarta, 6 November 2024 – The Prof. Soedomo Dental and Oral Hospital (RSGM) at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has made history by setting a new record in the Indonesian World Records Museum (MURI) for the Largest Simultaneous Fixed Orthodontic Braces Installation by the Most Orthodontists. More than 400 orthodontists from across Indonesia participated in this event, held under the theme "Social Service: Orthodontists’ Contribution to the Nation."

During this event, RSGM UGM provided free orthodontic treatment to those in need, particularly individuals facing financial constraints in accessing braces installation. The initiative was a collaborative effort involving seven leading public universities and dental hospitals, namely Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Universitas Indonesia (UI), Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad), Universitas Airlangga (Unair), Universitas Sumatera Utara (USU), Universitas Hasanuddin (Unhas), and Universitas Andalas (Unand). Additionally, eight regional branches of the Indonesian Orthodontic Association (IKORTI) supported the event.

This record-breaking achievement was made possible by the involvement of specialist orthodontists and orthodontic residents undergoing specialist training. They collectively installed braces on hundreds of patients, ranging from teenagers to adults. Besides new installations, the event also provided adjustments for patients already undergoing orthodontic treatment.

Beyond providing treatment, this event served as an educational platform. Orthodontists educated patients on proper brace maintenance, oral hygiene, and dietary guidelines to follow during treatment. The initiative aimed not only to improve dental health quality but also to expand public access to high-quality orthodontic care.

With orthodontists from Sabang to Merauke participating, the event symbolized a strong collaboration between educational institutions, healthcare professionals, and the community. More than just breaking records, this initiative reflected the spirit of giving and concern for those in need of dental healthcare services.

RSGM UGM has expressed its commitment to continuing similar programs in the future. With the success of this event, it is hoped that more people from various backgrounds can benefit from high-quality dental care without financial burdens.

This MURI Record achievement marks a historic milestone for Indonesia's orthodontic community while strengthening RSGM UGM’s position as a pioneer in social-based dental healthcare services. The achievement also supports the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically Goal 3 (Good Health and Well-being), Goal 4 (Quality Education), Goal 10 (Reduced Inequality), and Goal 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

The success of this event highlights the strong collaboration between RSGM UGM and Indonesian orthodontists, demonstrating a significant positive impact on improving public dental health.
