Contributing Songs at Senja Gurau: A Shortcut to Passing Clinical Exams?

Who would have thought that a cheerful afternoon could bring so much energy to the Dental Learning Center (DLC) Field? Lecturers, students, alumni, and staff joined in the fun on Friday (25/10) during the Senja Gurau (Twilight Jest) performance at the DLC Field, Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM). This fourth installment of the event was dedicated to the health cluster community.

Senja Gurau: A Collaboration of Alumni and Local Bands

Senja Gurau is a new program initiated by UGM's Directorate of Education and Teaching (DPP). While it originates from an academic unit, the event is non-academic. Designed to address mental health challenges at UGM, it serves as an artistic outlet to relieve stress.

The event featured performances from alumni band Kombatrin, GMCO String Quintet, Dentachestra, and Sastro Moeni. The evening's excitement was amplified by humor from MCs Anang Batas, Dibyo Primus, Bambang Gundul, and Fira Sasmita. Beyond scheduled performances, attendees could also contribute songs. “Who wants to sing a song? I'll pay 200,000 rupiah to anyone who performs!” joked Dibyo Primus, adding to the lively atmosphere.

Breaking the Ice to Ease Mental Pressure

One attendee stepped forward, laughing with their friends.

“Here’s our first singer, let’s give a round of applause!” said MC Fira Sasmita, met with cheers and clapping from the audience.

“What’s your name, and what will you sing?” asked Fira.

“My name is Zea. I’d like to perform a song, but I don’t want the 200,000 rupiah. Can I negotiate?” the attendee replied.

“I’d like to ask drg. Tantan something. Doctor, if I sing, can I skip the 200,000 and automatically pass my orthodontics exam? Hehehe,” Zea quipped.

This quipped instantly lightening the mood on the field.

It turned out that Zea is a clinical student in the Dentistry Professional Program at FKG UGM, about to take her clinical rotation exam. Students in the clinical program must complete all departmental requirements to be eligible for the exam, and passing requires meeting the minimum standard set by each department.

This lighthearted atmosphere is precisely what Senja Gurau aims to foster. The event brought together members of the academic community, strengthening their bonds. In addition to Zea, who performed Seandainya by Vierratale, another student, Mohan from the Faculty of Pharmacy, showcased his vocal skills. Singing the song Rungkad, Mohan captivated the audience with his entertaining performance.

The academic activities at UGM are undeniably intense, demanding both time and mental energy. Such a packed schedule can lead to stress, making it essential to balance these demands with enjoyable activities to maintain mental health. Senja Gurau reflects Universitas Gadjah Mada’s commitment to addressing mental health challenges on campus, providing a platform for relaxation and connection among its academic community.
