Understanding the Types of Toothpaste and Their Functions

Toothpaste is one of the most commonly used dental care products. However, did you know that there are various types of toothpaste with different ingredients? Let’s take a closer look at the details below.

Herbal Toothpaste

Herbal toothpaste uses natural ingredients such as plants and herbs. An innovation developed by students from the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada—Mutiara Annisa, Puteri Aulia Rizqi Kanina, and Nur Liyana Binti Hamid—resulted in Gamatop, a herbal toothpaste product made from natural ingredients like sea cucumber (gamat), temulawak(Curcuma xanthorrhiza), and turmeric.

Non-Herbal Toothpaste

Non-herbal toothpaste uses chemical ingredients such as fluoride and triclosan. Research conducted by FKG UGM student Bagus Manik Panji Priyatna, under the supervision of Prof. Drg. Suryono, SH., MM., Ph.D. and Drg. Prayitno, S.U., found that non-herbal toothpaste has a higher antibacterial effect compared to herbal toothpaste.

Functions of Toothpaste

Toothpaste serves several important functions, including:

  • Cleaning teeth: Removes plaque, tartar, and bacteria.
  • Preventing dental disease: Helps prevent issues such as cavities, gingivitis, and periodontitis.
  • Eliminating bad breath: Helps reduce bad breath by killing odor-causing bacteria.

Toothpaste is an essential part of oral care. There are various types of toothpaste, including herbal and non-herbal options. Each type has its own advantages and disadvantages, so it's important to choose one that suits your specific needs.
