Gum diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis are common oral health problems. The main cause is the buildup of bacterial plaque, which can trigger inflammation and infection of the gum tissues. Besides conventional treatments involving plaque cleaning and the use of antiseptic medications, herbal therapy has increasingly been discussed as a natural alternative for managing gum disease. But how effective is herbal therapy in addressing this issue?
Green Tea as a Natural Antiseptic
One herbal ingredient widely researched for gum health is green tea. Green tea contains antioxidant compounds that help reduce inflammation and fight bacteria responsible for gum disease. Research by students at UGM’s Faculty of Dentistry shows that green tea extract contains active flavonoid compounds with anti-inflammatory properties, making it effective in treating gingivitis. This proves that green tea can be a beneficial addition to maintaining healthy gums.
Curcumin and Gelatin for Gum Surgery Therapy
In more severe cases, such as gum recession, surgical intervention is often necessary. However, recent studies indicate that certain natural compounds may also help accelerate recovery after gum surgery. A study conducted by UGM Faculty of Dentistry students found that curcumin, an active compound in turmeric, combined with gelatin, is known to be effective as an anti-inflammatory and antibacterial agent. . This combination is believed to reduce inflammation and promote wound healing following surgery.
Savica Gum as a Herbal Solution for Dental Plaque
Dental plaque is a major factor in the development of gum disease. Therefore, preventing plaque formation is an important step in maintaining gum health. Savica Gum, made from natural herbal ingredients, was developed by UGM Faculty of Dentistry students as a solution to remove dental plaque and combat bad breath. Chewing this herbal-based product is expected to naturally reduce the bacteria that cause gum disease.

Based on these studies, herbal therapies show promise in helping to manage gum disease. Green tea extract can serve as a natural antiseptic, curcumin and gelatin contribute to post-surgical gum recovery, and Savica Gum acts as a preventive solution for plaque. However, it is important to remember that herbal therapies should be used as complementary treatments—not replacements for medical care provided by dentists. Consulting with professionals remains essential to ensure proper management of gum disease. These herbal therapies also support the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure), and SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption and Production).
