Why Are Dentures and Occlusal Balance Important?

In dental rehabilitation, making dentures is not only about replacing missing teeth. Ensuring optimal oral function and patient comfort is equally important. One of the most crucial aspects of denture fabrication is occlusal balance, which plays a major role in the success of denture use. Proper occlusal balance ensures that teeth function harmoniously, reduces the risk of complications, and improves patients’ quality of life.

Occlusal Balance

Research conducted by UGM Faculty of Dentistry student Dwi Atikah Sari, supervised by drg. Erwan Sugiatno, M.S., Sp.Pros.(K)., Ph.D. and Prof. Dr. drg. Haryo Mustiko Dipoyono, MS, Sp.Pros.(K), titled “Differences in Vertical Dimension of Occlusion Measurements Between Men and Women Using Willis Method, Ear Length, and Eye-to-Ear Distance”, found that vertical dimension measurements vary between men and women. This highlights the importance of individualized adjustments in determining proper occlusal dimensions to ensure optimal and balanced denture function.

Occlusal balance refers to the position where the upper and lower teeth contact harmoniously during chewing or at rest. Disruption of this balance may lead to various problems, such as muscle pain, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders, and uneven denture wear. Therefore, precise occlusal adjustments are essential in both full and partial denture fabrication to ensure even pressure distribution and minimize long-term complications.

The Impact of Dentures and Occlusal Balance

Beyond physiological aspects, occlusal balance also affects patients’ psychological well-being and comfort. Well-balanced and comfortable dentures can improve self-confidence, speech function, and chewing ability. Proper occlusal balance directly enhances patient comfort and the overall success of dental rehabilitation.

The success of denture use does not solely depend on the materials used but also on accurate occlusal determination. With careful attention to occlusal balance, dental rehabilitation can deliver maximum benefits in both function and comfort. Therefore, occlusal assessment and adjustment should be an integral part of every denture fabrication and care process.
