Tooth discoloration is a common problem that many people may experience. Teeth can change color due to various factors such as dietary habits, poor oral hygiene, or the side effects of medical treatments. Below, we will explore the common causes of tooth discoloration and how to prevent it.
Causes of Tooth Discoloration
- Food and Beverage Factors: Certain foods and drinks, such as coffee, tea, and red wine, can stain teeth. Pigments in these items may cling to and alter the color of tooth enamel.
- Poor oral hygiene: Neglecting oral hygiene, such as failing to brush regularly, can cause plaque and tartar buildup, turning teeth yellow or brown.
- Smoking: Nicotine and tar in cigarettes can accelerate tooth discoloration, making teeth appear darker and more yellow.
- Aging: As we age, the enamel layer becomes thinner, revealing the yellow dentin beneath.
- Medical Treatments: Some medications, such as tetracycline antibiotics, can cause tooth discoloration if taken during the tooth development stage in children.
- Non-vital Tooth Discoloration: Teeth with dead pulp (non-vital teeth) may darken. A study by UGM Faculty of Dentistry student Nicolas DOSY, supervised by drg. Wignyo Hadriyanto, MS.,Sp.KG(K) , explained that treatments such as the Walking Bleach Walking Bleach technique using 35% hydrogen peroxide gel can be used to treat discoloration in non-vital anterior teeth. This provides a solution for restoring teeth to a better appearance.
How to Prevent Tooth Discoloration
- Maintaining Oral Hygiene: Brush at least twice a day using fluoride toothpaste. Don’t forget to clean between your teeth using dental floss or other cleaning tools.
- Reducing Consumption of Staining Foods and Drinks: Limit intake of coffee, tea, and wine. If consumed, rinse with water immediately afterward to reduce staining.
- Quitting Smoking: If you smoke, quitting this habit is beneficial not only for your dental health but also for your overall well-being.
- Regular Dental Checkups: Visit the dentist regularly for professional cleaning and examinations to prevent problems before they arise.
- Using Whitening Products: If needed, consider using whitening products recommended by your dentist, especially for cases of discoloration.
