FKG UGM Student Shares Her Outbound Exchange Experience at Thammasat University

A student from Yogyakarta, Amadea Phritadevi, a Professional Dentistry Program student of FKG UGM Class of 87, has a memorable story from her outbound exchange program at Thammasat University.

Amadea first learned about the outbound student exchange opportunity to Thammasat University through an announcement shared by the Head of the Professional Dentistry Program, drg. Rurie, in the class group chat. After reading and considering the opportunity, she felt that the program aligned with her interest in gaining academic and clinical experience at the international level, as well as broadening her cross-cultural understanding. She then decided to apply by completing all required administrative documents. After going through a fairly thorough administrative selection process, Amadea was finally selected and given the opportunity to participate in the clinical observation program at Thammasat University. This experience became an important step in enriching her competence and expanding her perspective in dentistry.

Amadea felt the need to participate in the outbound exchange because the program provides an opportunity to broaden academic insights and deepen clinical understanding in an international context. Through this experience, she was able to learn various teaching approaches and clinical practices in dentistry abroad, which offered a beneficial and distinctive perspective in improving her competence as a future dentist. Additionally, the program also helped enhance her intercultural communication skills and build professional networks with students and faculty members from other institutions.

“All of these experiences are valuable provisions for my academic, professional, and personal growth,” Amadea shared.

During her outbound exchange at Thammasat University, the main activities she carried out included clinical observations. In these activities, she had the opportunity to:

  • Learn the use of various modern clinical instruments, some of which are not yet available at FKG UGM.
  • Observe and learn directly about patient management standards, including highly strict and well-organized sterilization procedures.
  • Understand patient administrative systems and healthcare service workflow in an international setting.
  • Observe various clinical cases commonly encountered there and learn their approaches to treatment.
  • Practice delivering communication, information, and education (CIE) to patients using systematic and effective methods.

Overall, the program provided highly valuable experience as Amadea was able to compare clinical practices at Thammasat University with those at FKG UGM, while also broadening her academic and professional insights.

The program was supervised by: From FKG UGM: Prof. Dr. drg. Rosa Amalia, M.Kes and Dr. drg. Rurie Ratna Shantiningsih, M.DSc., Sp.RKG From Thammasat University: Sirima Kulvanich, DDS, Ph.D.
