On 10 September 2024, drg. Andreas Tjandra, Sp.Perio, FISID, successfully passed his comprehensive examination for his dissertation proposal in the Doctoral Program in Dental Science at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada. This milestone marks the beginning of his research project aimed at improving dental implant procedures, particularly in complex cases requiring enhanced osseointegration with bone.
In his presentation, drg. Tjandra outlined his research plan, which focuses on generating data to refine dental implant procedures. His work is highly relevant to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 on education in developing countries and capacity building in the health sector. By advancing the understanding of dental implant technology, his research aims to contribute to better global health outcomes.
The data generated from this research is expected to pave the way for further studies in orthopedics, particularly regarding the use of implants. With advancements in procedures and tools utilizing the latest technology, drg. Tjandra hopes to offer alternative methods to prevent and treat tooth loss, a significant global health issue. This aligns with the SDGs' commitment to ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all at all ages.
drg. Nunuk Purwanti, M.Kes., Ph.D., Chair of the Examination Committee, expressed optimism about drg. Tjandra’s research. She stated, “Drg. Tjandra’s study is expected to bring innovations in dental implant procedures for cases with thin bone conditions. Surface modification of implants is anticipated to enhance osteoblast cell attachment. This attachment will be facilitated by cutting-edge technology that alters implant surfaces, allowing cells to adhere, proliferate, and mature into alveolar bone.”
The implications of this research go beyond dental applications. By improving the osseointegration process, drg. Tjandra’s work could significantly impact orthopedics, where similar principles of implant technology are applied. The potential for interdisciplinary research highlights the importance of capacity building in education and healthcare, especially in developing countries.
As drg. Tjandra embarks on his research journey, he emphasizes the importance of collaboration and knowledge-sharing among researchers and practitioners. He believes that by working together, they can overcome challenges in dental and orthopedic implant procedures, ultimately leading to better patient outcomes.
The Faculty of Dentistry at Universitas Gadjah Mada is committed to supporting innovative research that aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By fostering an environment of academic excellence and practical application, the faculty aims to contribute to the global discourse on health and education.
Drg. Andreas Tjandra’s research represents a significant step forward in dental science. His focus on in vitro adhesion and cell proliferation with titanium media not only demonstrates his dedication but also reflects the broader goal of improving health and education in developing countries. As he progresses, the academic community eagerly anticipates the results of his research and its potential to transform dental implant practices.
