Two PhD students from the Faculty of Dentistry at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) achieved outstanding accomplishments at the 6th Oral Biology Scientific Meeting (OBSM), held at the Faculty of Dentistry, Hang Tuah University, Surabaya, on 9-10 August 2024.
Two PhD candidates in Oral Medicine from UGM excelled in this scientific event. Amilia Ramadhani, a 2021 cohort student, won 1st place in the Oral Presentation Award category. Meanwhile, Christiana Cahyani Prihastuti, a 2024 cohort student, secured 2nd place in the same category.
The 6th Oral Biology Scientific Meeting (OBSM) featured a series of activities, including the National Working Meeting of the Indonesian Society of Oral Biology (PBOI), Scientific Seminars, Oral and Poster Presentations, Workshops, and Community Service initiatives.
Amalia Ramadhani won first place with her presentation titled "Enhancing Precision in Histological Quantification: A Study on Neurons, Axons, and Lymphocytes." Her research demonstrated a modified stereology technique to improve precision in histological data quantification, particularly when resources are limited. This technique allows for more accurate observation of 2D histograms, providing a more comprehensive 3D tissue representation.
On the other hand, Christiana Cahyani Prihastuti’s presentation, titled "Antibiofilm Activity of Katuk (Sauropus androgynus) leaf extract on Periodontal Pathogens – An in Vitro Study“, revealed that Katuk leaf extract has the potential to degrade and inhibit biofilm formation by periodontitis-causing bacteria. Her research indirectly opens new avenues for the development of adjuvant therapies for periodontal diseases.
Prof. Dr. drg. Juni Handajani, M.Kes, PBO, the Chairperson of the Indonesian Society of Oral Biology, expressed hope that this seminar would encourage more research collaborations between institutions in the field of oral biology.
