Rafidah, a dental student from Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), has successfully raised Indonesia's profile on the international stage. She achieved outstanding results at the 50th APDSA Annual Congress held at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand, from 2 to 4 August 2024. Rafidah passed a rigorous selection process and presented her innovative research before experts from various Asia-Pacific countries.
Rafidah's research, titled “Chicken Bone Hydroxyapatite on Angiogenesis through VEGF Optimization in Post-Exodontia Socket of Wistar Rats,” captivated the judges. The study focuses on using chicken bone hydroxyapatite to accelerate wound healing in dental extraction sockets.
“I am very grateful for this opportunity. The preparation process was quite challenging, especially balancing it with my co-assistant duties. However, the support from my advisors, family, and friends motivated me even more,” Rafidah stated.
She expressed her interest in participating in this competition as a chance to try something new, hone her public speaking skills, and expand her network. Rafidah began preparing in March, concentrating on drafting her research abstract. After successfully passing the abstract selection, she engaged in intensive presentation practice.
“I want to demonstrate that Indonesian students can compete on an international level. Moreover, I also wish to contribute to the advancement of dental science,” she added.
In addition to her achievements, participating in this competition provided Rafidah with valuable experiences, allowing her to meet students from various countries, experts, and engage in various academic activities such as lectures, workshops, and exhibitions.
Rafidah's success is expected to inspire other students to be active in academic and research activities. She aspires to pursue a master's degree and contribute more significantly to the development of dental science. “I want to thank everyone who has supported me, especially Prof. Tetiana, my advisor. I hope this achievement can bring pride to UGM and Indonesia,” concluded Rafidah.
Her contributions align with the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Pillar 4 (Quality Education), Pillar 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions), and Pillar 17 (Partnerships to Achieve the Goals).
