Yogyakarta, 29 August 2024 – Fifth-semester students of the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), participated in the Dental Restoration Practicum KGA with the theme “Class I Cavity Restoration with Glass Ionomer Cement” at the Harkati Dewanto Phantom Laboratory. The practicum was led by lecturers from the Department of Pediatric Dentistry, including drg. Anggun Dwi Andini, Sp.KGA, and drg. Putri Kusuma Wardani M., M.Kes., Sp.KGA (K).
This practicum aimed to train students in Class I cavity restoration on posterior deciduous teeth using glass ionomer cement (GIC). As a precautionary measure, students were required to wear complete personal protective equipment (PPE), including lab coats, masks, head caps, and gloves.
The procedure began with outlining the cavity preparation, following the caries lesion, followed by cleaning the affected tissue using a bur and an excavator. Other key steps included applying dentin conditioner, mixing GIC according to guidelines, and checking occlusal contacts using articulating paper.
This practicum is also part of FKG UGM’s commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3: Good Health and Well-being and Goal 4: Quality Education. Through this hands-on training, students are expected to apply their dental restoration skills to help improve public health quality.
By providing practical training, FKG UGM aims to produce graduates who are competent in pediatric dentistry and ready to face challenges in the dental profession.
