Yogyakarta, 28 October 2024 – The Department of Oral Medicine (IPM) at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), has successfully conducted the Extraoral Objective Examination Skills Lab Practicum. This practicum is part of the Basic Topics in Clinical Dental Procedures (DPKKG) course.
Held from 22-28 October 2024, at the Dental Unit Lab (DLC), 3rd Floor West Wing, DLC Building, FKG UGM, the practicum was attended by third-semester undergraduate students from the 2023 cohort. The students were guided by lecturers from the Department of Oral Medicine, including Drg. Fimma Naritasari, M.D.Sc., and Drg. Ayu Fresno Argadianti, Sp.PM., along with assistant instructors from IPM clinical students and Oral Medicine specialist residents.
During the practicum, students were trained in extraoral examinations, including general condition assessments, temporomandibular joint (TMJ) evaluations, lymph node inspections, and thyroid examinations. The curriculum also covered patient positioning and ergonomics, proper use of medical terminology, and clinical descriptions of extraoral findings.
Students learned to identify significant findings such as lymph node enlargement, TMJ disorders, thyroid enlargement, facial asymmetry, skin lesions, or skin discoloration. A key focus of the training was developing the ability to classify and interpret examination results.
"This practicum provides valuable experience for students in understanding and conducting extraoral examinations correctly," said Drg. Fimma.
drg. Ayu Fresno added, "A thorough and accurate extraoral examination aids in early diagnosis and appropriate treatment."
This activity aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3 on Good Health and Well-being, by equipping students with essential early diagnostic skills to support public health. It also contributes to Goal 4 on Quality Education through comprehensive training and Goal 17 by fostering collaboration among lecturers, clinical students, and residents to enhance medical education synergy.
By successfully organizing this practicum, FKG UGM reaffirms its commitment to producing competent healthcare professionals ready to face challenges in the field of dentistry.
