Passing the Comprehensive Exam, UGM Doctoral Student Prepares to Develop an Alternative Examination Method for Orthodontic Diagnosis

Yogyakarta, 12 August 2024 – Shella Indri Novianty, a doctoral student (Ph.D.) in Dental Science at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), Class of 2023, has successfully passed her comprehensive examination. On this important occasion, Shella presented her research proposal, which aims to develop an alternative examination method for orthodontic diagnosis that not only facilitates clinicians but is also cost-effective for orthodontic patients.

Shella, who has a background as an orthodontist, emphasized that developing this method requires not only expertise in orthodontics but also an in-depth understanding of anatomy, particularly regarding the structure of hard and soft facial tissues. This interdisciplinary approach is crucial to ensuring the accuracy and reliability of the proposed method.

Shella was accompanied by a supervisory team consisting of Dr. drg. Ananto Ali Alhasyimi, MDSc, Sp.Ort, Subsp. DDTK (K) as the primary supervisor, along with two co-supervisors, Dr. drg. Anne Handrini Dewi, M.Kes, and Dr. drg. Niswati Fathmah Rosyida, MDSc, Sp.Ort. Their guidance played a significant role in shaping Shella’s research and ensuring that it meets high academic standards.

The development of an alternative examination method in orthodontics is highly relevant in the context of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4: Quality Education, especially in the field of education in developing countries. By creating an effective and affordable method, Shella aims to improve access to orthodontic care for underserved populations.

In her presentation, Shella highlighted the importance of integrating modern technology with traditional diagnostic methods. She proposed the utilization of digital imaging and 3D modeling to create a more comprehensive understanding of patients' orthodontic needs. This innovative approach not only speeds up the diagnostic process but also reduces the time and resources required for treatment.

The potential impact of Shella’s research extends beyond individual patients. By improving diagnostic methods, she hopes to contribute to the overall quality of orthodontic education and practice in Indonesia. This aligns with the SDGs’ emphasis on quality education and the need for continuous improvements in healthcare systems.

As Shella embarks on this research journey, she is committed to collaborating with other researchers and practitioners in her field. She believes that sharing knowledge and resources is essential to advancing orthodontic care and education in developing countries.

The support from FKG UGM and her supervisory team has been invaluable in helping Shella reach this stage in her academic career. She expressed her gratitude for the encouragement and guidance she has received, which has motivated her to pursue her research with passion and dedication.

Looking ahead, Shella is highly enthusiastic about the potential her research holds for the future of orthodontics. She is determined to make a meaningful contribution to the field and hopes that her work will inspire students and professionals to explore innovative solutions in dental science.
