In today's globalized era, English proficiency is an essential skill, particularly in the field of dentistry. Students in the Doctoral Program in Dental Science are expected to understand and communicate medical information effectively in this international language. To support this, the Doctoral Program in Dental Science organizes a free English course every Thursday. This course aims to enhance the English language competency of students in the program.
The main goals of this activity are varied. First, it aims to prepare students to write and present research findings in English, both for journal publications and international conferences. This is particularly important as the academic world increasingly requires English language skills for effective communication.
Second, the course aims to improve students' communication skills in English, particularly in academic and professional contexts related to dental science. This is vital for their future careers, as they will need to interact with peers and professionals from around the world.
Additionally, this program will help students understand the latest literature and research in the field of dentistry, especially those often published in English. This exposure will not only broaden their knowledge but also keep them updated with the latest trends and advances in dental science.
Furthermore, the course will enhance students' listening and speaking skills. These skills will be developed through discussions, presentations, and interactive activities conducted in English. This practical approach will help them gain confidence in using the language in real-world situations.
The initiative also encourages collaboration among students from diverse backgrounds through group learning and interactive discussions. This collaborative environment fosters a sense of community and shared learning among participants.
Building students' confidence in using English in academic and professional contexts is another key goal of this course. As they become more proficient, they will feel more comfortable engaging in discussions and presenting their ideas.
Additionally, the course will help students prepare for English certification exams that may be required in their dental careers. This preparation is especially crucial for those aspiring to work in international settings or pursue further studies abroad.
Waryono, S.Pd., founder of Englishopedia Institute, expressed his enthusiasm and honor in being entrusted as the instructor for the Free English Course for students in the Doctoral Program in Dental Science at FKG UGM. He emphasized the importance of English language skills in the ever-evolving world of science and technology.
Waryono stated, "You are at the forefront of scientific and technological developments. However, to become successful professionals, English communication skills are crucial. English is not only a communication tool but also the key to accessing the latest knowledge and contributing to the global community." He reassured students that the course is designed to help them improve their English skills in an interactive and enjoyable way.
In closing, Waryono thanked all the students who participated and the organizers who made this activity possible. He encouraged everyone to make the most of this opportunity to be better prepared to face the increasingly global challenges in the field of dentistry.
This activity also supports the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goal 4: Quality Education.
