Prostho-Perio UGM-UI-Unair Expert Lecture: Socket Shield Technique – Benefits, Procedure, and Challenges by Qiao Fang, DDS, MSD

On 11 July 2024, an expert lecture hosted by the Prostho-Perio collaboration between Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), Universitas Indonesia (UI), and Universitas Airlangga (Unair) took place online via Zoom Meeting. This lecture aimed to enhance educational access in the field of dentistry, focusing particularly on the innovative topic of the Socket Shield Technique. Dr. Qiao Fang, DDS, MSD, a leading expert in dental implants, led this session, which was attended by lecturers, academic supervisors from UGM’s Prosthodontics department, and residents from UGM’s Specialist Dental Education Program (PPDGS) Prosthodontics classes from 2019 to 2023.

The lecture highlighted the benefits, procedures, and challenges associated with the Socket Shield Technique, a novel approach that helps preserve the alveolar bone after tooth extraction and enhances aesthetic outcomes in dental implants. During the session, Dr. Fang explained how this method could reduce the future need for bone grafting, which is crucial in developing regions where resources for advanced procedures are often limited.

Furthermore, Dr. Fang discussed the procedural steps to consider when applying this technique, from the tools used to patient management strategies. The lecture also covered the challenges practitioners might face in implementing the Socket Shield Technique, including potential complications, the necessary learning curve, and the importance of proper patient selection.

This Prostho-Perio initiative reflects a commitment to enhancing the quality of education in dentistry by providing valuable knowledge access to participants from various regions. This expert lecture not only benefits practitioners and dental students but also contributes to the advancement of inter-institutional collaboration, supporting the development of professionalism and knowledge sharing across geographical boundaries.

Through this activity, the Faculty of Dentistry at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 4 (Quality Education), by providing quality education to more practitioners and students in the field of dentistry.
