An expert lecture titled "Prosthodontics Considerations for Full Mouth Implant Placement" was held virtually via Zoom on 16 May 2024. Dr. Marwa Shembesh, BDS, MS, DScD, FACP, a prosthodontics expert from the University of Pittsburgh, USA, led the lecture. Lecturers and academic advisors from the Department of Prosthodontics at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), as well as students from the UGM Specialist Dentistry Program (PPDGS) in Prosthodontics, spanning cohorts from 2019 to 2023, attended the event.
In the lecture, Dr. Shembesh emphasized the importance of meticulous planning in dental implant therapy, particularly for full-mouth implant placements. She explained that treatment planning must simultaneously consider both surgical and prosthetic aspects to achieve optimal results. One key aspect discussed was the importance of implant positioning, as misalignment can affect aesthetic outcomes, function, and implant maintenance. "An incorrect implant position, such as one that is too facial, can lead to significant aesthetic and functional issues, as no prosthetic solution can cover such errors," said Dr. Shembesh.
Additionally, Dr. Shembesh highlighted the crucial role of the implant team, which includes various specialists such as surgeons and prosthodontists, in developing an effective treatment plan. She emphasized that the goal of modern dentistry is to restore function, comfort, aesthetics, and health for patients, even in cases where patients suffer from atrophy or diseases of the stomatognathic system.
Through this event, the Faculty of Dentistry at Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM) also contributes to the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4: Quality Education by providing participants with a deeper understanding of the importance of comprehensive treatment planning in specialist dentistry.
