Yogyakarta, 8 May 2025 – The Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), continues to demonstrate its commitment to integrating academic education with clinical practice through cross-program collaboration. This is evident in the guidance provided for the placement of “Immediate Implants” at the Central Surgery Installation of RSGM Prof. Soedomo.
This activity is part of the synergy between the Doctoral Program in Dental Science and the Periodontics Specialist Program, aiming to enhance clinical training quality while enriching students’ theoretical understanding. Participants included drg. Andreas Tjandra, Sp.Perio, FISID, doctoral students at FKG UGM, and drg. Kwartarini Murdiastuti, Sp.Perio., Sub.Sp. R.P.I.D (K), Ph.D., a lecturer of the doctoral program and Chair of the Periodontics Specialist Program, who assisted in the immediate implant procedure.
The immediate implant procedure was performed by periodontics specialist residents, with drg. Wahyu Septian as the primary operator, assisted by drg. Christoper Ernesto Budi, drg. Christian Oliver Wijaya, and drg. Ratih Sukmanaputri. The entire operation went smoothly, with a positive response from the patient.
Immediate implants involve placing a dental implant immediately after tooth extraction, unlike delayed implants that are placed after the extraction site has healed. This approach offers time efficiency, allowing patients to receive replacement teeth in a shorter period. However, it is not suitable for all cases, making proper patient selection and operator skill crucial for success.
Patients will undergo a four-month evaluation period after implant placement before prosthetic crown installation. This stage ensures proper integration of the implant with the bone and readiness of the oral structure to receive permanent dental prostheses.
This activity demonstrates the tangible synergy between doctoral and specialist programs in advancing dentistry through practice and research. Such collaborative models are expected to continue developing to support the improvement of dental health services in Indonesia while providing comprehensive clinical learning opportunities for students.
