drg. Maria’s Journey to Achieving Her Dream Degree

The path to achieving one’s dreams is often filled with challenges. For Maria Ristauli Sitompul, the title of “dentist” was not just a childhood aspiration but a journey of resilience, determination, and unwavering family support. Despite the hardships she faced, drg. Maria finally realized her dream and is now ready to serve the community.

drg. Maria had dreamed of becoming a dentist since she was a child, a goal she wrote in her high school yearbook. With the support of her family, especially her mother, drg. Maria confidently pursued this path. Initially, her parents suggested she become a general practitioner, but after careful consideration, she chose to study dentistry at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM).

Accepted at UGM with a scholarship, Drg. Maria felt her dream was within reach. However, university life brought unexpected challenges — from culture shock, and new learning methods to intense academic pressure — that shook her confidence. “At one point, I thought maybe this wasn’t God’s plan for me,” she recalled. Yet, her mother’s support and prayers continually gave her strength.

The journey became even more challenging during the Covid-19 pandemic when her clinical training was suspended, forcing her to return home. This situation was worsened by the loss of her father and several close relatives due to Covid-19. “Losing my father completely broke my heart,” she said with deep sadness. Despite the pain, she persevered and continued her education with renewed determination.

Year after year, various hurdles, such as finding patients and managing clinical costs, tested her resolve. “I want to help underprivileged people receive proper dental care,” she said. Whenever she felt like giving up, her mother’s encouragement reminded her to keep fighting for their shared dream.

“This journey taught me that every difficult process makes us stronger and more patient. God never left me,” she expressed gratefully. Now, drg. Maria is ready to care for patients and positively impact the community’s dental health.

In celebrating her achievement, drg. Maria shared a heartfelt message with her mother: “Thank you for being with me every step of the way. This is the result of our shared struggle, and your spirit will always be my strength.”

drg. Maria also extended her gratitude to her lecturers and the academic community of FKG UGM for their invaluable support and knowledge. “My deepest respect to all the lecturers and the academic community at FKG UGM. I am very grateful for your assistance, attention, and knowledge. I sincerely apologize for any words or actions that may have been inappropriate. May you always be protected by God and achieve continued success,” she said.

drg. Maria’s dedication aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 5: Gender Equality, and SDG 10: Reduced Inequality. Her commitment reflects a deep concern for education and healthcare services, especially for underprivileged communities.
