Publication in reputable international journals is one of the key benchmarks in academia. However, achieving this requires strategy and in-depth understanding. Prof. drg. Ika Dewi Ana shared a series of practical tips that can serve as a guide for researchers, lecturers, and students to succeed in publishing internationally. The session was part of the Training of Trainer (ToT) on Publication Clinic Mentorship held on Thursday, 24 July 2025.
The first and most fundamental tip is not about writing technique, but about research foundation. According to her, quality publications can only come from high-quality, well-executed research. Such research must demonstrate strong novelty and significance.
The second tip is about choosing the right journal. Journal selection requires careful consideration of several aspects, such as topic suitability with the journal’s aims and scope , reputation reflected in indexing within credible databases, and metrics such as Impact Factor or Scimago Journal Rank (SJR).
“Be cautious of predatory journals by checking the publisher’s background and whether the payment scheme is reasonable,” warned Ika Dewi Ana. She further explained that predatory journals disregard proper publication ethics and quality, often prioritizing financial gain over the integrity of scholarly work.
The third important tip is following the rules set by the journal publisher. Ika Dewi Ana highlighted the importance of carefully studying theauthor guidelines. Before submitting a manuscript, authors must double-check essential requirements, from (ethical clearanceto proper citation and referencing format. “A manuscript that complies with the guidelines will have a greater chance of passing the initial review stage,” she noted.
At the end of the session, Prof. Ika Dewi Ana added that the use of active sentences is generally preferred by most reputable journals, as it makes writing clearer and more concise. She also advised authors to use precise wording and avoid unnecessary phrases to ensure that the writing remains straightforward, focused, and easy for readers to understand.
