Wates Group Achieves Recognition at Summer Course 2024

Yogyakarta, 8 November 2024 – Wates Group, one of the teams participating in the Summer Course 2024 with the theme "Empowering Communities for Climate Health Resilience" organized by FK-KMK UGM,, successfully earned recognition as one of the best groups through their video presentation. This achievement highlights their contribution to exploring local climate change and health issues in the Wates Community Health Center (Puskesmas Wates), Kulon Progo.

The group consisted of students from the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing (FK-KMK) UGM, the Faculty of Dentistry (FKG) UGM, and the Vrije Universiteit Medical Center (VUmc), Netherlands. The team was led by Dimas, a student from FK-KMK UGM.

Under the guidance of field instructor Dr. Dian Monika Sharie and field supervisor Christia Aye Waindy Vega, S.Kp.G., MDSc., the group demonstrated exceptional dedication in completing their field tasks, which included identifying local issues related to the theme, prioritizing problems, designing solutions, implementing programs, and evaluating outcomes. They actively participated in regular activities at Puskesmas Wates, such as mosquito larvae inspections and waste management at KSM Amrih Resik.

One of their innovative programs was nutrition education at SDN 1 Triharjo, designed to be child-friendly and aligned with the "Isi Piringku" (My Plate) nutrition guide. This activity successfully raised students' awareness about the importance of healthy eating and hygiene, showcasing interdisciplinary collaboration that aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly: SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, SDG 6: Clean Water and Sanitation, and SDG 13: Climate Action.

"We feel deeply appreciated and grateful to the Summer Course 2024 committee for organizing this event so well. The competition was assessed by doctors and professors from FK-KMK UGM, with Wates Group standing out for their creative video presentation, which effectively showcased their evidence-based program implementation. The video depicted the collaboration between students, the Community Health Center (Puskesmas), and local communities in creating tangible solutions to the impacts of climate change.

"On behalf of myself and Puskesmas Wates, I would like to express our gratitude for the opportunity and trust given to us through this Summer Course program. It has been incredibly beneficial, and the activities and feedback from the participants have also provided us with valuable learning experiences," said Dr. Dian, who also thanked Dr. Susilo Pradyarto, the head of Puskesmas Wates, for his support and guidance throughout the program.

As the field supervisor, Christia Aye commended the team’s efforts, while Suparjono, SKM., and Ikarina Chrisjanie, A.Md.KL., the field facilitators from Puskesmas Wates, provided full support for the program's execution. With this achievement, Wates Group is expected to inspire similar initiatives in the future, reinforcing global commitments to health resilience and environmental sustainability.
