Faculty of Dentistry UGM Hosts SEA-EUROPE Bio-TUNE Summer Course

The PhD Program at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), once again organized a summer course as part of its academic internationalization efforts. Held from 10-14 July 2023, the event titled SEA-EUROPE BIOTUNE SUMMER COURSE 2023 focused on the theme "Strategies to Develop New Generation of Multifunctional Scaffolds and Implants with Cell Instructive and Antibacterial Properties." Fifteen speakers from various universities worldwide, including the National Research and Innovation Agency, University of Glasgow, University of Bristol, Acibadem University, University Politecnica de Catalunya, Universidad Nacional de San Martin, Institut National de la Sante et de La Recherce Medicale; SPARTHA Medical, University Sains Malaysia, University of Camerino, Max Planck Gessellschaft, Fraunhofer Institute for Ceramic Technologies and Systems, as well as Universitas Gadjah Mada itself, participated as hosts.

This summer course targeted undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students, researchers, and managers from the industrial sector. One hundred eleven participants from 27 countries across Asia, Europe, America, and Africa enthusiastically engaged in the hybrid-format event, which included welcoming sessions, introductions, lectures, campus tours, laboratory and innovation center visits, workshops, outdoor learning activities, and city tours. Despite being held in a hybrid format, the enthusiasm of participants from diverse continents was palpable throughout the event. After the program, participating students were encouraged to initiate research and compile publications related to the theme, which could earn them 3 transferable credits.

The SEA-EUROPE BIOTUNE SUMMER COURSE 2023 represents a significant contribution by the PhD Program at FKG UGM to regenerative medicine, particularly in the development of tissue engineering. The program aims to educate young academics on a platform that unites researchers and clinicians from various parts of the world and disciplines on fundamental concepts, the latest methods, and recent biomaterial and biomedical research advancements. Additionally, it aims to showcase Indonesia's richness, diversity, innovation, and excellence to the global community.
