The advancement of digital technology has brought significant changes to the way people access health information. In dentistry, these developments offer broad opportunities to enhance public awareness through digital campaigns. Social media, health applications, and interactive content have become effective tools for delivering promotive messages on the importance of maintaining oral and dental health.
Digital-based oral health promotion not only reaches wider audiences but also enables two-way interaction between healthcare professionals and users. Through this approach, health messages can be delivered in a more engaging, personalized, and sustainable manner.
The Role of Digital Media in Oral Health Education
Digital platforms such as Instagram, YouTube, TikTok, and Android-based applications have been widely used in health campaigns. Visual media, particularly educational videos, have proven to be more effective in attracting attention than text-based materials alone. In addition, the involvement of health influencers and dentists active on social media increases public trust and encourages positive behavioral change.
In the digital era, health messages can be packaged in light yet informative formats, such as short videos demonstrating proper tooth brushing techniques, the dangers of excessive sugar consumption, or the importance of routine dental check-ups every six months.
Effectiveness of Digital Media in Oral Health Promotion
A study conducted by FKG UGM student Mega Puspitaningtyas under the supervision of dr. Lutfan Lazuardi, M.Kes., Ph.D., drg. Lisdrianto Hanindriyo, MPH., Ph.D., Dr. drg. Sri Widiati, MPH., and Dr. drg. Bambang Priyono, S.U., entitled “Perbedaan Pengaruh Media Promosi Kesehatan Gigi dan Mulut Model Video dan Artikel pada Aplikasi Berbasis Android terhadap Pengetahuan dan Sikap Terkait Kesehatan Gigi dan Mulut serta Kepuasan Pengguna Aplikasi pada Murid Sekolah Menengah Atas,” demonstrated that video-based promotional media had a greater impact on improving knowledge and attitudes compared to text-based articles. This finding indicates that interactive visual media are more effective in conveying health messages, particularly among younger age groups who are accustomed to digital technology.
The study also highlighted that users were more satisfied with video-based content because it is easy to understand, engaging, and capable of motivating the adoption of healthy behaviors. These findings emphasize the importance of innovation in the design of digital oral health campaigns.
Effective Strategies for Digital Campaigns
To achieve optimal outcomes, digital oral health campaigns should consider the following aspects:
- Attractive message design — Use infographics, animations, and short videos with clear and simple language.
- Audience segmentation — Tailor messages to specific target groups such as children, adolescents, or parents.
- Consistency and continuity — Campaigns should be conducted regularly and sustainably to reinforce public awareness.
- Cross-sector collaboration — Healthcare professionals, educational institutions, and digital communities can work together to expand the reach of health messages.
- Impact evaluation — Use surveys or digital analytics to assess campaign effectiveness and refine future strategies.
