As the new academic year approaches, the Oral Disease Specialist Program at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), finalized its curriculum on 14 June 2024. This activity was carried out to ensure that the education provided aligns with the needs of the community and the development of dental medicine.
In the workshop organized by the Department of Oral Disease Science at FKG UGM, course coordinators were present to offer input on improving the Program and Activity Learning Plan (RPKPS) for the Oral Disease Specialist Program.
“We are confident in the ability of the course coordinators to provide valuable insights for the program’s curriculum due to their experience and competence in teaching,” said Dr. drg. Dewi Agustina, MDSc., Head of the Department of Oral Disease Science at FKG UGM.
dr. Widyandana, MHPE, Ph.D., Sp.M(K) from the Department of Medical Education and Bioethics at FK-KMK UGM was invited as a speaker to discuss the integration of clinical learning and hospital services within the curriculum of dental specialist education. The Head of the Oral Disease Specialist Program, drg. Hendri Susanto, M.Kes., Ph.D., Sp.PM, presented the Vision, Mission, Goals, and Objectives of the Program Curriculum.

The demand for oral disease specialists in Indonesia remains very high. According to available data, the number of oral disease specialists is far below the required figure. The need for oral disease specialists in Indonesia is approximately 2,400, but only 227 specialists are currently available. Given this situation, the reopening of the Oral Disease Specialist Program at FKG UGM is a strategic step to meet the public’s need for quality dental healthcare services.
drg. Hendri Susanto, M.Kes., Ph.D., Sp.PM, as the head of the Oral Disease Specialist Program, expressed readiness to provide education and teaching to students. “This year, the program has admitted 5 new students,” said Drg. Hendri. The students will complete a 6-semester program over 3 years.
The curriculum developed by the program covers various aspects, ranging from basic sciences to clinical practice. Students will be equipped with adequate knowledge and skills to diagnose and treat various oral diseases. Additionally, the curriculum integrates clinical learning and hospital services, enabling students to apply the knowledge they gain in practice.
Students enrolled in the program are required to complete 50 credits with 27 courses. These courses are divided into four categories: general basic courses, core skill courses, specialization courses, and oral disease science courses.
The event continued with a discussion led by six facilitators to develop the curriculum for each semester. This workshop is expected to provide a deeper understanding of the curriculum and the Vision and Mission of the Oral Disease Specialist Program, as well as ensure that the Learning Outcomes (CPL) and Course Learning Outcomes (CPMK) are included in the education curriculum.
