As the new academic year approaches, the Oral Medicine Specialist Program at the Faculty of Dentistry, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FKG UGM), finalized its curriculum on 14 June 2024. This initiative aims to ensure that the quality of education provided aligns with societal needs and the latest developments in dental medicine.
The curriculum finalization workshop was organized by the Department of Oral Medicine at FKG UGM, with Course Coordinators in attendance to offer their insights for refining the Semester Learning and Activity Plan (RPKPS).
"We trust in the capabilities of our Course Coordinators to provide valuable input for this program's curriculum, given their experience and expertise in teaching," said Dr. drg. Dewi Agustina, MDSc., Head of the Department of Oral Medicine at FKG UGM.

The demand for oral medicine specialists in Indonesia remains high. Current data indicate that the number of available oral medicine specialists is significantly below the required number. Approximately 2,400 oral medicine specialists are needed in Indonesia, but only 227 are currently available. In response to this shortage, reopening the Oral Medicine Specialist Program at FKG UGM is a strategic step toward meeting the public's need for high-quality dental health services.
drg. Hendri Susanto, M.Kes., Ph.D., Sp. PM, the head of the oral medicine specialist program, expressed readiness to commence the teaching and learning activities. "This year, the oral medicine specialist program has accepted five new students," Drg. Hendri stated. The students will undertake a six-semester program over a span of three years.
The curriculum developed by the program covers a wide range of aspects, from fundamental sciences to clinical practice. Students will be equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to diagnose and treat various oral diseases. Additionally, the curriculum integrates clinical learning and hospital services, enabling students to directly apply their acquired knowledge in practical settings.
Students are required to complete 50 credit units (SKS) through 27 courses, categorized into four groups: general basic courses, core specialty courses, advanced specialty courses, and oral disease courses.
The event continued with discussions facilitated by six facilitators to design semester-specific courses. This workshop aimed to provide a deeper understanding of the curriculum and the Vision and Mission of the Oral Medicine Specialist Program, ensuring that the Graduate Learning Outcomes (CPL) and Course Learning Outcomes (CPMK) are incorporated into the education curriculum.
